Dog Rescued on Long Pond Road
Concord Police officer, passerby free Rottweiler mix from entrapment near a storm drain.
A dog that appeared to be caught down a ravine near a storm drain on Long Pond Road is being evaluated at the Pope Memorial SPCA after being rescued by a passerby and Concord Police Officer Jason Wimpey.
Eaton Tarbell, a local attorney, happened to be driving on the road when he saw a dog on the side of the road that appeared to be stuck or caught in something. He then pulled over to see if the dog was OK.
“I’m a dog guy, so …” he said, stopping to see what he could do.

The dog was down in a wooded area and had appeared to be in the area for a while, since it had dug up and clawed at much of the dirt near the drain. The dog would get within about 10 feet of Tarbell but no more, he said.
Tarbell called police and Wimpey arrived at the scene.

Using Tarbell’s leash, Wimpey was able to get the dog to calm down and then led it into his cruiser. The dog appeared to be limping along as it was safely secured into the back of the police car.
“It doesn’t always happen that easily,” Wimpey said after closing the cruiser’s door. “It took a little bit. The uniform sometimes really spooks a dog. But I coached it up to me and it came right out.”
The dog had no tags on it and was transported to the Pope Memorial SPCA in Concord for evaluation and treatment.
Shannon Camara, the director of special events and educational outreach at the shelter, stated that the dog was a young female Rottweiler mix and was “very scared” after coming to the shelter. They wanted to give it time to settle in before doing an extensive evaluation but she seems to be doing OK, she noted.
