CONCORD, NH — Concord fire and rescue teams and New Hampshire State Police were sent to a fatal motor vehicle accident Sunday on Interstate 93.

Dispatch told firefighters just after 5:30 a.m. that a car drove off the highway and into some trees on the southbound side of the highway. One adult appeared to have died but a child was alive, according to dispatch, and a second ambulance was requested a couple of minutes later.

A few minutes after that, when Engine 5 arrived, the firefighter said the car had "extremely heavy damage," and a scene command was started. A state trooper shut down the right side of the highway and told dispatch the vehicle was about 30 feet into the woods. The damage was so bad it required two tow trucks to transport the wreckage, according to reader submitted photos.

A trooper also requested other arriving troopers from the north to look and see if there was any other damage along the highway during the previous mile or so, according to scanner chatter.

State police also sought assistance from Concord police about one of the registered owners of the vehicle, according to dispatch.

Traffic was backed up on the southbound side of the highway for a number of hours during the investigation.
