First Girl Places 1st In Capital City Classic Wrestling Tournament: New Hampshire Results
Bow places 4th; Concord 5th; Bedford, Merrimack, Nashua, Portsmouth, Souhegan, and Windham wrestlers all compete; $10K raised for boosters.
CONCORD, NH — Anyone who has watched Lily Runez of Keene wrestle during the past few years knows she has a lot of talent.
Like dozens of other girls in New Hampshire, Lily shows no fear when facing off against boys who are often taller and stronger than she is. She has won a lot of matches in her wrestling career. This year, wrestling watchers around New Hampshire have seen Lily, a sophomore, plow through nearly all of her challengers all season long.
Coach Peter Runez jokingly said Lily’s dominance was due to being fed Filipino food during the off-season. Whatever it is, it surprised no one on Saturday when she won the 106-weight class at the Capital City Classic Wrestling Tournament, becoming the first girl to win in the tourney’s 33-year history.
