Five Rivers Conservation Trust to Hold Annual Meeting May 28

As bald eagles rear this year’s chicks right here in the capital region, Five Rivers Conservation Trust will hold its annual gathering of members and friends and host a special presentation about the recovery of bald eagles in New Hampshire and in the Five Rivers’ region, according to a press statement.

On Thursday, May 28, 5:30 p.m., at Havenwood Heritage Heights, Five Rivers will briefly recap its successful year and introduce Chris Martin, NH Audubon’s raptor biologist to tell the story of how bald eagles have returned to our state.

Bald Eagles began to nest in the Granite State again in 1989 after a 40-yr absence, and today, there are over 40 breeding pairs of Bald Eagles in the state, including at least one confirmed pair in the Five Rivers region. They typically nest in mature trees near forest edges or in super canopy trees which are much taller than the surrounding forest areas, near large bodies of water.

Thanks to their recent recovery, the Bald Eagle was removed from the federal Threatened and Endangered Species List in 2007, and downlisted from Endangered to Threatened in the New Hampshire in 2008. The success of Bald Eagles in New Hampshire comes thanks to the efforts of New Hampshire Audubon and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Over the past 25 years, our speaker, Chris Martin has helped with the effort to bring bald eagles back to New Hampshire.

Attendees at the Annual Gathering will learn about Five Rivers activities over the past year, have time to visit with Five Rivers members and friends and learn more about the efforts to help this majestic species recover and once again occupy an important place in New Hampshire’s ecosystem.
