Gibson's Bookstore Wins Independent Spirit Award

Award is issued by the Book Publishers Representatives of New England to recognize excellent stores.

The relatively new Gibson’s Bookstore location on South Main Street in Concord has won the 2014 Independent Spirit Award, offered by the Book Publishers Representatives of New England, according to Shelf Awareness, a book business newsletter.

The award is given to bookstores throughout New England and some parts of New York state to recognize “excellence in a bookstore member of New England Independent Booksellers Association.”

Michael Herrmann, the owner of Gibson’s Bookstore, said he and his team were really happy to receive the recognition.

“It’s a great honor to be chosen for this award at the same time that independent bookstores are making a powerful comeback all through New England,” he said in an email.

According to Shelf Awareness, book representative Ron Koltnow nominated store and said that it had “always been great at creative events, community outreach, and just plain old-fashioned bookselling. Now, in the beautiful new store, they have become a powerhouse in New England bookselling.”

The award will be present at the New England Independent Booksellers Association fall trade show later this month in Providence.

Previous winners include the Harvard Bookstore, Porter Square Bookstore, Brookline Booksmith, and Toadstool as well as others.
