Himalaya Heritage Music Group Comes To Concord
The Concord Community Music School hosts two free Bach Lunch programs in April.
From Concord Community Music School: Concord Community Music School presents two free Bach’s Lunch programs in April, a lecture and a concert featuring four skilled Nepali musicians from the Himalaya Heritage Music Group.
On Thursday, April 5, at 12:10pm, Sharad Gurung and Sagar Khatiwada present a Bach’s Lunch Lecture, “East meets West: Connections between Nepali and Western Music.” The musicians will explore cultural sharing of musical instruments and traditional harmonies, with examples from genres including children's, devotional, and patriotic music. Instruments from their home country of Nepal will help illustrate their talk. Gurung describes his line of interest “to find an understanding and meeting point between arts and culture of various traditions of the world. I have chosen music to be that meeting point of understanding and sharing.”
The following week, on Thursday, April 12, at 12:10pm, Gurung and Khatiwada participate with two of their fellow members of the Himalaya Heritage Music Group in a Bach’s Lunch Concert entitled “Nepali Music in America: A New Tradition.” The musicians are Sharad Gurung, keyboards; Shyam Nepali, sarangi; Harimaya Adhikari, harmonium & vocals; and Sagar Khatiwada, tabla. The performers, all native to Nepal, are highly trained in these musical traditions and sought after for public concerts and traditional celebrations throughout New England.

“Music of the Americas” is the theme of this year’s Bach’s Lunch programs, which follows upon last year’s series entitled “Musical Migrations.” Throughout this year’s series, programs will feature music of North, Central, and South America, reflecting the many cultural traditions present in the Western Hemisphere. As a member of the Steering Committee of Welcoming Concord, the Music School has multiple programs that advance the goal of warmly welcoming New Americans into the cultural, economic, and civic life of the region.
