Kimball Jenkins School of Art Hosts Abstract Exhibition

The Kimball Jenkins School of Art is proud to present “Lighting out for Territory,” an exhibition of work by Paul Pollaro, Martin Mugar, Susan Carr, Addison Parks and Jason Travers.

An Artists’ Reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 13, at the Kimball Jenkins School of Art 266 N. Main St Concord. The show runs from March 13, to April 30.

The title, taken in part from a classic line in Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn,” suggests this exhibition is about a break with the familiarity and security of traditional abstraction. These five artists light out into the visually unexplored territories of the tactile and the visceral.

Yale educated Martin Mugar has shown throughout New England for more than three decades. His work has been reviewed in “Provincetown Arts”, and numerous times in “Art New England” and “The Boston Globe” and is included in the recently published book “Boston Artists.” His painting can be found in many public collections including The Boston Public Library, The Museum of Modern Art - Armenia,The Danforth Museum and the Weatherspoon Museum in NC. His paintings are created with oil and wax using a frosting applicator. Paul Pollaro who hails from Brooklyn, NY, and received his MFA from Indiana University, has had many gallery affiliations and exhibitions, including one person shows at Aucociso Gallery in Portland, ME, Soprafina in Boston, MA and Nahcotta in Portsmouth. Once a Maine resident he now lives and works in Rollingsford. He uses tar to construct his images.His work radiates a crepuscular light of some primordial reality.

Jason Travers received a BFA in painting from the Art Institute of Boston, and an MFA in Painting from American University. His work is held in collections throughout the world from Exeter to Bangkok, Thailand. He lives and works in Providence, RI. His paintings are constructed with multiple panels contrasting and suggesting a dialogue between traditional notions of landscape and abstraction. jasonatravers.com/

Addison Parks lives with his wife and children a stone’s throw from Walden Pond. He earned his painting chops as a boy in the Via Margutta artist community in Rome in the early 60’s, studying with Gino Severini, and then later in New York at the invitation of Richard Tuttle. He received his BFA from RISD in 1976. His work has been written up in the “New York Times”, “ARTS Magazine”, the “Boston Globe”, and the “Rome Daily American”. Susan Carr graduated from The School Of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts in 2003 with a MFA in Art and liberal arts respectively. Susan is a painter and sculptor,who uses a variety of unusual material to create her art. Susan Carr enjoys working with everyday objects alongside fine art materials.
