CONCORD, NH — A man from Massachusetts was arrested and held without bail Thursday morning after being accused of striking two New Hampshire State Police troopers on the northbound side of Interstate 93.

Around 12:30 a.m., state police dispatch received reports of a potentially disabled Honda Civic on the left side of the highway in Concord just before Exit 17. Tyler Dumont, a public information officer for state police, said the vehicle had no lights on.

The first trooper found the car, a 2011 model, and attempted to speak to the driver, Mugil Malai, 28, of Westford, MA.

“Malai, whose driver’s side door had been open, immediately closed and locked the door,” Dumond said. “He then attempted but failed to start the vehicle. Malai then got out of the Honda, charged, and struck (a) trooper in the head.”

Another trooper, who had arrived at the scene to assist, accused Malai of striking her, too. According to scanner chatter, one of the troopers suffered from a facial laceration.

“After a brief roadside struggle,” he said, “the troopers took Malai into custody.”

Concord fire and rescue teams were requested to the scene.

Malai was arrested on assault on a police officer and resisting arrest charges. He was taken to the Merrimack County Jail and held on preventative detention. Malai arraignment schedule in Concord District Court was pending.

The troopers were treated for minor injuries at Concord Hospital and released later.
