McAuliffe Elementary Krypto Team Tops in Concord

An elementary school competition was held last week with the city's West End school coming in first.

The McAuliffe Elementary School Krypto Team is the best in the district after competing with other schools last week, according to Principal Kristen Gallo.

The competition was held on June 5, at the central office.

Krypto is a card game where the players race each other to combine five number cards using the four basic math operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to arrive at a target number, Gallo noted. Numbers on the playing card range from 1 to 25. The dealer puts down five random cards and then finally, a target number card. Once a player uses all five cards to mentally calculate the target number, they yell Krypto and must explain their formula within 30 seconds, she said.

According to coach Rebecca Olive, the McAuliffe team formed in January and met weekly to learn the game. During the month of May, the team met several times a week before school to practice. The players “were dedicated and wanted to practice,” she noted.

The hard work paid off – the eight team members for McAuliffe “hung in round after round, which allowed our team to gain enough points to put Christa McAuliffe on top and take first place,” Olive stated.
