National Drinking Water Week

Concord celebrates Drinking Water Week, 5/3-5/9.

The American Water Works Association is hosting its annual National Drinking Water Week May 3, 2015 through May 9, 2015 and the City of Concord is celebrating with an educational outreach about the importance of drinking water.

Water is a valuable resource that is relied on daily for hydration, public health, and fire protection. The City of Concord prides in providing the community of Concord, NH with easy access to clean and safe water.

The City of Concord’s General Services Department provides water treatment and distribution for Concord. Penacook Lake is Concord’s primary source of drinking water and is treated at the City’s Water Treatment Plant. The Water Treatment Plant treats an average of 4 MGD (million gallons a day) and an average of 5.5 MGD in the summer. Concord’s water treatment process involves a traditional surface water treatment of coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration. Continuous testing is done in the lab to ensure the water supply is within accordance of national standards that are enforced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The City of Concord produces an annual Water Quality Report to provide the public with detailed information about the quality of their drinking water. The 2015 Water Quality Report can be found by visiting www.concordnh.gov/WaterQuality2015.

Concord’s water infrastructure contains 168 miles of pipe that is responsible for delivering potable water from the Water Treatment Plant to approximately 11,800 water service connections throughout the city. From source to tap, Concord General Services works to ensure the Concord community is receiving the best quality of water at all times.

Clean, accessible drinking water is directly linked to the protection and maintenance of the infrastructure of water systems, which is why the City of Concord is proactive in continuing to invest in our aging infrastructure. Concord General Services encourages everyone in the Concord community to visit www.concordnh.gov/water to learn about their drinking water and the dedication that goes into ensuring that water reaches the tap every time the faucet is turned on.
