Warning in effect until 5 p.m.; flash flood watch up until 2 a.m. on Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Merrimack, Hillsborough, and Rockingham counties through 2 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.

The alert was issued at around 2:30 p.m.

Rain will be heavy at times through this evening causing problems in urban and poor drainage areas, leading to the potential – and dangerous – flash floods.

The NWS is also warning about the southern and eastern part of the White Mountains where as much as four inches of rain is expected to fall during a short period of time.

If you see floods in the road, do not drive into the water.

“Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear,” the warning stated. “Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road. When encountering flooded roadways, make the smart choice: Turn around, don’t drown.”

The rain is expected to taper off by midnight.
