CONCORD, NH — This year is the 100th anniversary of the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce and the city's largest business organization is going to go all out to celebrate its Citizen of the Year event, scheduled for Nov. 6, during the org's annual meeting. Nominations are open through Sept. 27. The award recognizes members and nonmembers of the chamber who give back to the community.

Qualifications include being an individual who lives in the area and their activities should be centered the Greater Concord area; should recognize leadership and performance in several areas of community service across many years; and the person should have contributed to the general benefit of the community, as a whole, and demonstrated exceptional ethical qualities.

"It's the highest honor the chamber awards," said Tim Sink, president of the chamber. "It's kind of a capstone award, for an individual."

Sink said a selection committee of past recipients will eye the nominations. Each year, there are a large number of nominations because, he added, there were so many great people in the city, contributing to its health and vitality.

In the past, the event was presented to the individual as a surprise. A few years ago, the chamber changed this process because it was often difficult to keep a secret – as well as to get the awardee to the event without telling them why they were going to an annual chamber meeting. Sometimes, as well, family members would miss the event because they didn't know about it in advance.

"Some people didn't appreciate that surprise, when they are in a room with 300 or 400 people, and all of a sudden, their name is called and they have to get up to the podium and say a few words," he said. "You can imagine how difficult that is."

The award is not given posthumously and all nominations are kept confidential.

Nomination forms can be downloaded online.
