Northfield Triple Homicide: Investigators Searching NH Highway For Evidence

Troopers and Fish & Game are searching the I-93 median between Concord and Tilton for clues in the Kassandra Sweeney and sons' killings.

CONCORD, NH — Investigators attempting to solve a triple homicide in Northfield are searching Interstate 93 on Wednesday for more evidence connected to the case.

State troopers and New Hampshire Fish and Game officers were seen south of the Exit 20 interchange in Tilton, as well as other areas of the highway, searching the median for evidence connected to the killings of Kassandra Sweeney, 25, and her two sons, Benjamin Sweeney, 4, and Mason Sweeney, 1, on Aug. 3.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said law enforcement officials would be searching the area between Concord and Exit 17 and Tilton and Exit 20 for most of the day.

“The search activity poses no danger to the public and will consist of a search for physical evidence,” Michael Garrity, the director of communications for the attorney general’s office, said. “The search activity is not the result of new information in the case but is part of the ongoing investigative process. As previously announced, at this point in the investigation, investigators have identified all involved parties and there is no threat to the general public.”

Garrity said anyone traveling on I-93 on Wednesday should “follow all road signage in the area” in an effort to “provide investigators appropriate space to complete their work.”

Investigators were on Shaker Road in Northfield Saturday searching a wooded area around the family home for evidence. Fish and Game used a K-9 trained in finding ballistic items.

A K-9 unit was seen in the highway’s median on Wednesday, but it's unknown what the dog was trained to find.

During the past 48 hours, the New Hampshire State Police helicopter has been in the air, searching the area along I-93, according to online flight tracking websites.

According to flight trackers, the copter spent a lot of time circling the Exit 18 area of Canterbury, as well as W Road and Carter Hill Road. The copter also circled extensively around an area of the Canterbury Woods Country Club just before the town line with Northfield.

A GoFundMe effort for the family has received more than $44,000 in donations from nearly 700 people.
