Porter Publishes 12th Novel

Concord historian's latest book, "A Pledge of Better Times," comes out next month.

Local novelist and historian Margaret Porter, recently designated one of Concord’s “Eight Most Fascinating Individuals,” will see her 12th novel, “A Pledge of Better Times,” published on April 14, according to a press statement. An author appearance and book signing is scheduled at Gibson’s Book Store in Concord at 7 p.m. on April 30, with others events to follow in New Hampshire and out of state.

Over the course of her career Porter, an award-winning and bestselling novelist, has seen her work published by major publishing houses and translated into many foreign languages. She studied British history in the U.K. and has worked in theatre, film, and television as writer and producer. Her on-location experience includes three feature films and a television series. An occasional newspaper columnist and book reviewer, she contributes articles on British history and travel to numerous publications and special-interest blogs. Her poetry was featured in the literary magazine Granite Review.She is listed in Who’s Who in America; Who’s Who in Authors, Editors and Poets; and Who’s Who in Entertainment. Margaret returns to Great Britain annually to research her books. She served two terms in the New Hampshire Legislature and holds various leadership positions in the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire.

A Pledge of Better Times explores the political and religious upheavals of late 17th century England through real-life characters at royal courts in England, Holland, and France, and results from extensive on-site research at palaces and other locations in those countries. Porter is fascinated by similarities and differences between that era and the present day: disputes over church and state, questions of loyalty and personal liberty, and evolving gender roles.
