Public Invited to Participate in Jazz and Voice Workshop Week

Faculty at the Concord Community Music School present a variety of workshops in jazz and voice.

The public is invited to attend and participate in Concord Community Music School’s annual Jazz and Voice Workshops November 17-20. The free workshops, which include jazz vocals, percussion, and songwriting, welcome all ages and musical abilities. Observers are welcome at all workshops.

Monday, November 17

Songwriting Workshop, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
with Jason Crigler

Release your inner songwriter. Explore the songwriting journey from ideas and inspiration to finished, polished songs, with a focus on lyrics and form.

Wiimote Ensemble, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
with Jason Crigler

Musical improvisation meets the digital age! Create a spontaneous group composition using the revolutionary Wiimote game controller. Space is limited, so please sign at the reception desk or by calling 603- 228-1196.
How to Listen to Music, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

What makes a song classical, folk, or jazz? Explore how musical elements come together to create the genres we love.

Introduction to Computer Recording, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Got a song to record? A demo CD to produce? Find out how you can record music using your own computer.

Percussion Workshop, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Experience the rhythm, energy, and community of African drumming.

Backing Track Masterclass, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
with Andrea Veal

No band? No problem. Bring a back-up track, learn how to use a simple sound system, and explore the differences between performing with live accompaniment vs. singing pop/rock with a recording.

New Orleans Street Band, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
with Matt Langley and Tim Gilmore

Take the beat and your feet to the streets of New Orleans! All instruments welcome.

Making Jazz Sound Like Jazz November 18, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
with Dorothy Yanish

Experiment with slides, scat, octave changes, rhythmic sounds, and more. Try a sampling of these vocal jazz tools on one of your favorite songs.

Take Me to the River, 5:00-6:00 p.m.
with Faculty

It’s your chance to be Al Green, one of the Talking Heads, or a totally new ensemble! Join the band as we create a new arrangement of this classic R&B song. There will be parts for rhythm section, horns, and vocals.

Build a Band, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
with Faculty

Create a band, find your sound, rehearse with new friends, and play a song—all in one evening. All instruments and singers are welcome.

A Guide to Auditions, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Beatles Jam Session, 5:00-6:00 p.m.

It’s been a hard day’s night—time to unwind with some Beatles music. Come play a variety of Beatles hits. All instruments and all levels are welcome.
