Route 4 Bridge Jumper Taken Into Custody In Boscawen

Capital region firefighters, police, New Hampshire State Police, others were called to the Merrimack River for a water rescue on Thursday.

BOSCAWEN, NH — Capital region first responders quickly prepared for a water rescue after a man jumped off the Route 4-King Street bridge near the Hannah Dustin Park & Ride on Thursday.

Police received a report about a possible suicidal subject on the Route 3 bridge in Boscawen. Limited information is available about the initial call but a tipster told police a man might be jumping from the bridge. Later, a second person, a witness called 911, to report a man had jumped from the bridge. New Hampshire State Police also arrived to assist.

Around 4:45 p.m., Boscawen and Concord firefighters as well as the Penacook Rescue and Webster EMTs were sent to the area. Concord firefighter boats were also requested to prepare for a possible water rescue.

After arriving, one law enforcement official reported seeing a man in black shorts near the water. Concord firefighters staged on Merrimack Street in Penacook, preparing to travel upstream to the bridge to assist.

Officers tracked the wet footsteps of the man by the river’s edge until they found him. The officers gave the man a blanket, assisted him back to the road, and placed him in a police cruiser. The man, according to scanner chatter, was known to police due to prior incidents.

The Boscawen battalion chief told dispatch around 5:15 p.m. that all of the mutual aid could be canceled since the jumper had been taken into custody. Penacook Rescue was held in case the man needed treatment.
