Second-Degree Murder Suspect Caught: Marshals

Breaking: Billy Damuel Maldonado Cancel, a NH Fugitive of the Week two weeks ago, was captured in New Britain, CT, this morning.

CONCORD, NH — Billy Damuel Maldonado Cancel, 23, formerly of Manchester and Puerto Rico, who has been on the lam for about a month, was captured by U.S. Marshals in Connecticut on Oct. 14, 2016, according to a press statement. Maldonado Cancel, according to Manchester Police, allegedly shot and killed Jonathan Vazquez-Ojeda, 25, at the intersection of Merrimack and Beech streets on Sept. 14.

Marshals were requested to find Maldonado Cancel not long after the shooting since he had all but vanished. The suspect was featured as a Fugitive of the Week on Sept. 28.

“It was through a cooperative investigation that it was determined that Maldonado Cancel was in hiding in New Britain, CT,” according to Deputy Marshal Jeffrey White. “This morning, members of the US Marshals Fugitive Task Forces from both CT and NH, along with Homeland Security Investigations and officers from the New Britain Police Department were able to safely take Maldonado Cancel in to custody.”

Maldonado Cancel was charged with being a fugitive from justice and is being held without bail. He will eventually be returned to New Hampshire to face the murder charge, according to White.
