McGowan Fine Art announces the opening of “See You Again” featuring recent works by Amparo Carvajal-Hufschmid and Lucy Mink. The show will run from June 2 - July 3, with an artist reception on June 5 from 5 to 7. This show is free and open to the public.
The prints of Amparo Carvajal-Hufschmid are abstract compositions which combine various textures and slight color shifts. In her current Hobo Series she employs the iconography developed by hobos to communicate with each other. “These pieces are quite painterly and include a lot of hand gesture as I apply pastel, wax and graphite to the surface” says Amparo. “I use blocks of wood like other artists use brushes, running each section through the press multiple times to achieve a nuance of color.”

Inspired by her college professor, famedUruguayan artist, Antonio Frasconi, she includes the wood grain in her imagery. “He gave me a respect and admiration for the grain. You are starting with something precious that can be exploited or not.” This is most apparent in her piece entitled “Fresh Water.” Like the wall of an old barn, each board has the undulating rhythm of wood printed slightly off register so as to display each new layer of ink. A rolling line transposed over the grain is the symbol for freshwater. It also adds a rawer element to the more subtle background.
“I have always been envious of people who could write lyrics that sum up exactly what I am feeling,” says Lucy Mink. “It is what I try to do with my paintings.” Starting with simple striped underpainting, Mink picks out organic shapes that are the hallmark of her paintings. Color, subtle modulation and patterns are her primary mode of communication, but painting titles serve as her repositories for non-sequitorial thoughts.

On occasion Mink’s message can be raw and disconcerting as in her large watercolor “Solo Tournament.” Yellow passages collide with viridians and pinks, opaque forms are juxtaposed with transparent washes. The near chaos of the surface is reined in by the uneven border that creates a window into the heart of the painting.
The more lyrical painting, “Travel,” is a petite oil with a powerful punch. The bold simplicity of this painting is in contrast to her more patterned imagery. Deep cobalt blue forms a distant sky over a pink tinged mountain range. Despite the diminutive size, 5” x 6”, the painting has the vastness of a monumental landscape, hemmed in by a delicate border on each side. It is the magic of Mink’s paintings that envelops the viewer regardless of size.
