Senate Tables Right-to-Work Bill

Bill sponsor made motion to table, critics pan bill as attack on unions.

State Sen. Jim Forsythe, R-Strafford, said he moved to table House Bill 1677 today based on similar legislation that failed to become law last year.

Speaking as the Senate co-sponsor of the bill, Forsythe said in a statement:

"This is because the committee-recommended amendment resulted in the same content that the Senate passed last year 16-8, but failed to pass into law. My commitment to pass Right to Work in order to bring jobs to New Hampshire is as firm as ever, but given the numerous bills that we have coming over from the House it is important to focus our efforts this year on bills that can pass into laws and have an immediate positive impact on jobs and the economy in New Hampshire."

House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt, R-Salem, and Rep. Will Smith, R-New Castle, are the other main sponsors of the bill, which was officially introduced as "an act relative to choice as to whether to join a labor union and eliminating the duty of a public employee labor organization to represent employees who elect not to join or to pay dues or fees to the employee organization."
