Sobriety Checkpoint Held This Week In NH

NHSP, Chichester Police will host a sobriety checkpoint at a location in town sometime this week, according to state police.

CONCORD, NH — The New Hampshire State Police and Chichester Police will be checking vehicles this week after state troopers requested – and were granted – sobriety checkpoint in that community. The sobriety checkpoint, according to Staff Sgt. Charles Johnston of Troop D, “is the most effective method of detecting and apprehending the impaired operator.” The location of the checkpoint was not released but was approved by the Merrimack County Superior Court.

The program, approved by the NH Highway Safety Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, provides federal highway safety funds to support these checkpoints.

“A review of records has shown that the use of alcohol by individuals who operate motor vehicles has resulted in an alarming number of deaths and personal injury accidents,” Johnson stated in a press release. “The purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to deter, detect and apprehend the impaired driver. The New Hampshire State Police has taken an aggressive stance to prevent persons from driving when intoxicated. New Hampshire has some of the most aggressive laws in the country to fight the intoxicated driver and the law enforcement community will use those tools to their full extent.”
