Teen, Out on Probation, With Numerous Warrants Tries to Grab Officer’s Gun: Cops

Dana Hathaway of Northwood was arrested in the Queen City after a traffic stop. He allegedly gave a false name and struggled to get a gun.

MANCHESTER, NH — A New Hampshire teen was arrested this morning and held without bail on a 72-hour probation hold after allegedly attempting to get access to a police officer’s weapon after a traffic stop in Manchester, according to police. Dana Hathaway, 19, of Northwood, was arrested on May 6, 2017, for disobeying a police officer, resisting arrest or detention, and attempting to take a firearm from a police officer. He also had active warrants on four counts of domestic violence-simple assault, violation of protective order, criminal mischief, a New Hampshire State Police warrant for assault and a warrant from Sullivan County for criminal threatening with a deadly weapon.

According to police, at just before 12:30 a.m. this morning, an officer stopped a vehicle near the Auburn and Pine streets intersection for a reported red light violation. The driver – Hathaway – allegedly told the officer that he was being taught to drive by the teenage owner of the vehicle, who was a passenger. He then allegedly gave the officer a false name and said he didn’t have a license, according to Sgt. Richard Brown of the Manchester Police Department.

“While investigating the information provided by Hathaway, (a) sergeant arrived to back up (the) officer,” Brown stated. “(The) officer learned from the passenger that the name Hathaway provided was false. While speaking with Hathaway at the rear of the vehicle, he began to tense up when confronted with his real name.”

The sergeant started to pat Hathaway down for safety reasons when he reportedly pulled away, spun back around toward the sergeant, and grabbed for his gun, Brown alleged.

“While doing this, he pulled on (the) sergeant’s gun with one hand and held off (the) sergeant’s arm with the other,” Brown stated. “He was brought to the ground and forcibly handcuffed.”

Not long after, police learned of the multiple active warrants against Hathaway and that he was on probation, so a hold was issued against him. Hathaway is due in Manchester District Court on Monday.

According to the Eagle Times, Hathaway was named a fugitive of the week this week after a May 1, warrant was filed out of Sullivan County Superior Court for an alleged probation violation. He was previously convicted of criminal threatening in 2016, while living in Goshen. Back in March 2015, while living in Springfield, he was arrested in Nashua for theft by unauthorized taking and resisting arrest or detention, according to an online police blotter.
