Trooper OK After CT Man Sideswipes Cruiser: NHSP

The crash occurred on the southbound side of I-89 in Hopkinton; a search warrant has been issued for the driver's cellphone records.

HOPKINTON, NH — A New Hampshire State Police trooper was unharmed this morning after a driver reportedly struck his cruiser on I-89, according to state police. The crash occurred at around 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2017, on the southbound side of the Interstate in Hopkinton.

A 2003 Saab 93 convertible, driven by a 21-year-old, Salisbury, CT, man, “sideswiped the cruiser while the trooper was making a car stop,” according to Staff Sgt. Charles W. Johnston of Troop D. The trooper was standing outside of the cruiser at the time of the crash and was uninjured. Both vehicle sustained “disabling damage” and were towed from the scene.

The driver reportedly admitted to driving between 75 and 80 mph in a 65 mph zone, Johnston alleged in a press alert.

“He did not explain what caused him to strike the cruiser, which was parked to the right of the fog line in a straightaway with its emergency lights on,” Johnston stated.

A search warrant is being sought to obtain the driver’s cellphone records as part of the investigation. Charges had not been issued against the driver at post time.
