Today, Saturday, May 11, 2019, was a very special day here in Exeter, as it was today that the people of Exeter got the chance to meet one of the most important Presidential Candidates of the 2020 presidential election cycle; I’m talking about Beto O’Rourke of Texas.

If elected President of the United States, Beto O’Rourke would become that singularly significant historical figure in American history, the one who put a stop to the polluting practices of our society that have placed us all in jeopardy of our planet becoming uninhabitable. Beto’s greatest strength in this area is that he is able to explain so clearly what the problem is, what Climate Change means in the lives of real people, and what needs to be done. He has the clarity of vision to express himself convincingly.

People need to understand; look, Climate Change means that man-made behaviors are damaging our environment, our atmosphere, and our Earth. This is a problem we all face, a problem that absolutely must be addressed. We cannot leave the custody of our planet to those who wish only to exploit it.

But the problem of Climate Change is not the only enormously difficult problem that we are facing today in our society. We have another problem, and that is the polarization, the destruction of our democracy from within by extremist political behaviors and by extreme, violent conduct.

We also have a sense that those in power are thoughtless, careless, lawless and greedy. We have the sense that our country is being run by people who do not care about the needs of real human beings.

These problems are real.

A democracy is a truly wonderful thing but it is as fragile as human life. We must care for our democracy, with the attention and compassion and vigilance that we provide to our children.

In watching and listening to Beto O’Rourke answer some of the typically challenging questions we in New Hampshire ask at these presidential campaign events, I was especially impressed that Beto O’Rourke has the capacity to listen, address concerns, and find common ground with people, while maintaining a positive and uplifting demeanor.

Positive, uplifting, understanding, compassionate, reflecting good intentions, having clear ideas as to how to address the needs of real people in this country: This is the type of person who should be President of the United States, right?
