Mirsky: The Truth About Ted Cruz and Donald Trump

Taking a true measure of the GOP's leading candidates.

EXETER, NH - This year’s leading Republican Presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, have a lot of explaining to do. The Republican Party of the United States has a lot of explaining to do. That group of people comfortable with racism in their midst, needs to explain what they are trying to do to our country.

We are not hearing enough in the televised news media about the horrible ideas being promoted by the Republican Party, because the news media likes anything that causes controversy as controversy brings money to the news media.

News outlets like the major Cable News television stations have abdicated their position of protecting the American people from the deceit and manipulation that is always present in politics.

First, let’s talk about international law. Why do we have a prohibition against torture? Because we don’t want torture to become the way of life on this earth. So we have prohibited it.

The Republican Party candidates for president, the leading candidates, Trump and Cruz, embrace torture, treating it as an acceptable, even desired, form of behavior.

That is the world you will be living in if you vote for a Republican this year. You will deliver your children and grandchildren into a world where torture is commonplace.

The politicians supporting torture will have you believe that they support torture as an acceptable form of behavior because they are, purportedly “strong” and “realistic”. There is nothing strong or realistic about supporting torture, it is a threat to civilization.

Trump and Cruz are not being strong, they are just being stupid. They would seek to stop the criminal behavior of terrorist by turning our government officials into the criminals.

Second, Donald Trump has threatened the use of nuclear weapons. Cruz has talked about bombing our enemies in a manner that suggests the use of nuclear weapons. This is more stupidity.

Any average person can think of a way to end all conflict in the world, yes, there is a simple way to do that, just destroy the world and you won’t have any more conflict. That is Donald Trump’s solution. Or maybe he doesn’t realize that other countries on this earth are in possession of nuclear weapons?

How stupid! From a Presidential candidate!!!

We have worked long and hard, the sane people of this earth, to try to limit the possession and use of nuclear weapons, because proliferation of nuclear weapons is dangerous for us all, it would eventually place such weapons in the hands of a government that would use them against us. So the Republican Party is now embracing a front running candidate who supports a policy that would place the United States, our country, under the threat of the use of nuclear weapons against us.

Third, both Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, have called for the U.S. government to take punitive action against members of a particular religion, Islam, the religion claimed falsely by the terrorists now active in Syria and Iraq.

How stupid is this idea?

Well, the United States of America is based on freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom generally. When you even suggest that our government should prohibit the free exercise of religion, any religion, you are canceling out the purpose of America.

Just as an aside, two of America’s greatest sports legends are members of the Islamic religion: Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Wake up, Republican Party, these men are two of our most cherished heroes.

Donald Trump and Ted Cruz intend to “protect” America by canceling out the purpose of America. They intend to end freedom.

And don’t think it is only members of the Islamic religion who would be at risk if our government were allowed to punish people simply because of their religious beliefs. No, the Republican Party of Trump and Cruz would then have established the government’s right to control religion in this country. That would be the end of America as we know it.

And all of this Republican Party noisemaking and anger and political violence we have seen this year began with racist statements made by Donald Trump when he announced his candidacy for President of the United States. Racist statements made against Mexican Americans.

We should all have been completely horrified by this, because official statements of racism in a campaign for the Presidency of the United States are official acts by an organized group that is being given the voice and opportunity to promote those ideas. And it is only today that Trump is targeting Mexican Americans, tomorrow it will be any other group that can be used as a convenient scapegoat for whatever goes wrong in our society.

It is an ill wind that is blowing throughout America right now.

People of good will need to fight back.
