Bicyclist Injured in Accident Arrested

Police say Gordon Paul was biking while intoxicated, caused Saturday crash that shut Daniel Webster Highway.

The Nashua resident injured in an accident involving a car and bicycle has turned himself into police on a charge related to the accident.

Capt. Mike Dudash said Gordon Paul, 39, of 47 Temple St., Nashua, was charged with reckless conduct following the in front of Citizen's Bank, for two hours on Saturday afternoon. He was allegedly biking while intoxicated.

Dudash said Paul was released from the hospital over the weekend, with injuries he did not know the extent of.

"He was well enough to come to the station with crutches, to turn himself in on charges. He was charged with reckless conduct," Dudash said on Tuesday afternoon "... He was under the influence of alcohol, operating a bicycle and that he caused a motor vehicle accident causing injury to himself or with potential to cause injury to someone else."

that Paul was traveling north along Daniel Webster Highway on his bike. At the same time, Angela Merrill, 30, of Merrimack was headed in the same direction. Merrill struck Paul as he attempted to cross the road in front of Citizen's Bank, police said.

When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Paul's bike was laying on it's side in the southbound lane, Paul was conscious and laying in the roadway, police said. He was transported by to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua for treatment of his injuries.

Daniel Webster Highway was closed at Smith Road, which loops around the bank, for about two hours while police investigated at the scene.

Merrill was not injured in the accident. Paul is due in district court in Merrimack on Sept. 27.

The accident was the first of two that closed a Merrimack thoroughfare on Saturday.

The driver, Crystal Dwyer, 54, of Merrimack was airlifted by a DHART helicopter to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries. Dudash said he did not have an update on Dwyer's condition but according to the Nashua Telegraph, she was in the surgical intensive care united, listed in fair condition on Monday.
