NASHUA, NH — A former Gate City resident who strangled and assaulted an intimate partner, causing broken bones, is in prison serving 12 and a half years or more, according to John Couglin, the Hillsborough County Attorney.

Jonathan P. Fote was sentenced on March 12, during a contested hearing in Hillsborough County Superior Court South, after he pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree assault-domestic violence, second-degree assault-domestic violence, obstructing government administration, and six counts of domestic violence-simple assault in January.

In November 2023, police were sent to a home on Ash Street for a report of a domestic disturbance involving a man who was seen kicking a woman. Officers made contact with the man, Fote, who would not let the police into the home to check on the victim. Police had to breach the door and, when inside, found the woman, who had obvious signs of serious bodily injury endured during the assault.

The victim said Fote kicked and punched her following an argument, and she was taken to the hospital for treatment. The woman sustained a nasal fracture and broken ribs during the attack. Fote was indicted in two separate rounds of charges, in 2024 and 2025, according to documents published on Patch.

Fote was sentenced to 12-and-a-half to 30 years in the New Hampshire Prison for Men. Two and a half years of the minimum sentence will be suspended if he successfully completes the FOCUS and substance use disorder treatment programs. The court also recommended he participate in batterer’s intervention programming. After being released, Fote will be subject to a three-and-a-half- to seven-year sentence, suspended for 15 years.
