NASHUA, NH — A man was arrested on Tuesday accused of stabbing a family member in the parking lot of a local hotel after an argument about package deliveries at another address in the city.

Around 2:30 p.m., police were sent to the parking lot of the Extended Stay Hotel on Southwood Drive for a report of a stabbing not far from the front entrance of the hotel. When officers arrived, they spoke with Joseph Pavone, 62, who said he got into an argument with another man, who was a family member, about packages being delivered to a condominium, according to an affidavit. The other man said, via text message, he wanted to meet to talk. After arriving, the man texted Pavone to let him know he was in the parking lot, the report stated. Pavone said he thought it was “suspicious,” so he grabbed a kitchen knife, concealed it, and went out to the parking lot, the report said.

“As a means of defending himself, Pavone explained that he pulled the knife out of his pocket and proceeded to push (the man) away, stating something to the effect of, ‘do not come any closer’,” the officer wrote. “As a result of this, Pavone advised that he stabbed (the man) with the knife.”

The victim was taken to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment. Pavone agreed to go to police headquarters to make a statement while other officers spoke to the victim — who had a wound near his armpit.

The victim told police he met with Pavone to give him his packages and when in the parking lot, “Pavone quickly approached him and began yelling at him,” according to the report. He pushed Pavone away, to create distance, and then realized “Pavone had been holding a large kitchen knife and, subsequently, realized that he had been stabbed.”

A witness was also interviewed who claimed to hear the two men yelling at each other between vehicles in the parking. When he went around to see what happened, the victim told him he had just been stabbed.

Detectives interviewed Pavone and he was arrested on a felony first-degree assault charge and held without bail.

According to superior court records, Pavone pleaded guilty to numerous illegal gambling charges in Hillsborough County in October 2002.
