Student Appointed to Statewide BH Youth Sustainability Council

First Lady Valerie Sununu hosts student delegates to discuss sustainability in preparation for "shark tank" style competition.

October 31st 2019 Nashua, New Hampshire—We are proud to announce Jane Baymar has been appointed to represent MicroSociety Academy Charter School as a student delegate for First Lady Valerie Sununu’s 2019-2020 Bridges House Youth Sustainability Council held in partnership with Project Green Schools.

The Bridges House Youth Sustainability Council (BHYSC) brings together students from across the Granite State to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders. As part of the Youth Council, students will share ideas about what can be done to promote sustainability within their schools and communities throughout New Hampshire and discuss these ideas with peers, business and policy leaders.

“We are delighted to have Jane as a student delegate on the BHYSC and thankful that First Lady Valerie Sununu is passionate about engaging youth in these conversations,” said Amy Bottomley, Director of MicroSociety Academy Charter School.

The Youth Council will convene in October with an informational meeting and again in the Spring for the BHYSC Sustainability EXPO, which is a “Shark Tank” style competition for green projects. Both council meetings are held at the Bridges House, the official residence of Governor and First Lady Sununu in Concord, New Hampshire.

For the Sustainability Expo, student delegates will build a team that will develop proposals at their home schools to be presented in front of a panel of sharks at the EXPO. Project topics can address issues such as energy usage, water consumption, land use, food/waste, or other relevant categories. Cash prizes will be awarded to winning teams as a stipend to help fund the top green projects presented so students can implement these initiatives in their schools.

Through this experiential learning exercise students will gain an understanding of a variety of skills related to leadership, communication and teamwork. They will use critical thinking to develop creative solutions to real-world sustainability-related problems or challenges experienced in their school community.

We congratulate these students for their leadership and wish them luck in this endeavor! For additional information, please visit: https://projectgreenschools.org/bhysc.
