Dispatch received a report of a woman stating that a man approached her vehicle and allegedly tapped on the window with a silver handgun. The woman fled the scene and the man reportedly chased after her in his vehicle, and crashed on South Broadway, according to Capt. Joel Dolan of the Salem Police Department.

“The operator of the car that crashed then fled the scene after striking another pole and was stopped by patrol officers near the intersection of South Broadway and Veterans Memorial Parkway,” Dolan alleged. “After stopping the vehicle and approaching the male, officers discovered he was highly intoxicated and uncooperative.”
The man, later identified as Baez, was arrested and transported for processing but once there, he allegedly refused to identify himself and became combative.

“He head-butted one officer in the face and it took several officers to take him to the ground and control him,” Dolan alleged. “Due to his combative nature, he was transported to the County Jail in Brentwood to be held for arraignment.”
The officer was treated for injuries to his face and knee, according to Dolan. An extensive search of the area and vehicle have not revealed a handgun, at this time, he added.
Baez was arraigned this morning.
