Massive Storm Could Bring 2 Inches Of Rain, Coastal Flooding To NJ

A storm spreading rain across a 1,600-mile zone will arrive in New Jersey on Saturday. Here's the latest.

NEW JERSEY — Another wet weekend is in store for the Garden State, with heavy rain and up to two inches of precipitation possible as a massive storm looks set to bring rain to at least two dozen states.

The wide-reaching storm is on a 1,600-mile journey and will blow into the region by Saturday, said forecasters. Major cities and travel hubs along the East Coast will get soaked throughout the day, and the rain is expected to continue into Sunday, per AccuWeather and the National Weather Service.

A widespread total of 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible in the state/region from this storm, with flooding possible late Saturday into early Sunday in urban areas and those with poor drainage. Coastal flooding will also be a risk along the Jersey Shore, with the heaviest rainfall predicted for South Jersey.

“It's not only the big cities but also the million square miles that make up the suburban and rural areas in between that can expect pouring rain from the storm,” AccuWeather forecasters said.

Rain may hold off until around midday for cities east of Trenton and towards the coast, forecasters added.

“Expect steady rain, heavy at times, Saturday afternoon through much of Saturday night before it tapers off early Sunday,” said the National Weather Service, adding that the chance of showers lingers into Sunday.

Northeast winds will also increase Saturday night into Sunday morning, with gusts up to 30 miles per hour near the coast, according to forecasters. This will bring the potential for widespread minor tidal flooding with the high tide cycle during the day Sunday, the NWS added.

The heaviest rainfall is expected to be over the Philadelphia metro area and into southern New Jersey, forecasters said. The New York City metro is expected to see around 1 to 1 and a half inches, per the NWS.

Blustery conditions will continue in the region Sunday and into Monday, AccuWeather added, with temperatures in the 50s and possibly dipping into the 40s at times during the day.
