NJ Property Taxes Hit A New High: See Your Town's Rate

On average, New Jersey property owners paid $9,803 in property taxes in 2023 — or $300 more than in 2022, according to state data.

NEW JERSEY — The average property tax bill in the Garden State increased by more than 3 percent last year, bringing New Jersey's property tax levies to a new high, according to new state data and reports.

In 2023, New Jersey property owners paid more than $3.3 billion in taxes, an increase of more than $1 billion from 2022, according to data released last week by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.

On average, New Jersey property owners paid $9,803 in property taxes in 2023, or $300 more than in 2022. That's an all-time high for the Garden State, according to reports by NJ Spotlight News and NJ 101.5.

What owners paid in taxes last year varied greatly depending on where their property was located.

According to state data, the average property tax bill either decreased or stayed the same in 46 municipalities. Meanwhile, more than 90 percent of towns saw property tax rates increase, with 11 of those municipalities recording double-digit spikes.

Washington Township in Burlington County reported the largest spike in the state. Home to 700 people, property taxes in Washington Township increased by 29.5 percent in 2023.

Other municipalities reporting large increases were Tavistock in Camden County (27.4 percent), Mantoloking in Ocean County (19.1 percent), Asbury Park in Monmouth County (14.5 percent) and Stockton in Hunterdon County (13.6 percent.)

Meanwhile, Teterboro in Bergen County reported the largest decrease in property taxes. Bills there fell by 9.8 percent in 2023.

Other municipalities reporting the largest decreases were Loch Arbour in Monmouth County (-8.2 percent), Walpack in Sussex County (-7.7 percent), Shiloh in Cumberland County (-6.6 percent) and Atlantic City (-5.8 percent.)
