2 More NJ Tornadoes Confirmed, Total Stands At 13 This Year
While the state has a record of 18 tornadoes in one year, the annual average is two, weather experts said.
SOUTH JERSEY — Two tornadoes formed in separate South Jersey communities during severe thunderstorms on Thursday evening, said the National Weather Service.
The NWS Mount Holly office said it confirmed a tornado in East Greenwich Township (Gloucester County) and one in Browns Mills, Pemberton Township (Burlington County). More information, including wind speeds and the damage path, will be made available later Friday.
The two South Jersey communities are about 44 miles apart.

Local emergency management officers reported seeing funnel clouds Thursday in these towns, according to the NWS. Survey teams were headed out around 9:45 a.m. Friday to look at the reported damage, according to an NWS spokesperson.
A funnel cloud was reported at around 2:08 p.m. in East Greenwich Township, per NWS storm reports. About an hour later, the Pemberton Emergency Manager reported seeing a funnel cloud "just to the east and northeast of Browns Mills" at 3:10 p.m., the reports said.

The NWS sent out a tornado warning for east central Burlington and northeastern Ocean counties on Thursday afternoon which expired at 3:30 p.m. Gloucester County was not under a tornado warning.

The year with the most recorded tornadoes in New Jersey history is 1989, when 18 tornadoes were recorded, according to data from the Rutgers University Extension. But between then and 2021, there was not a single year with more than nine tornadoes — and a number of years where there were not any. New Jersey also had 13 confirmed tornadoes in 2021, and two last year.
