Tornado Confirmed Monday In North Jersey: NWS

Weather officials now say a tornado touched down Monday night in Hunterdon County, causing damage to trees and buildings.

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ — Weather officials said a tornado touched down Monday night in Hunterdon County, following more investigation into the wind damage that happened during strong thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service said that an EF-0 tornado was confirmed in Holland Township, carrying peak winds of 85 miles per hour. The tornado caused "significant damage" to two farm buildings, and also caused tree damage, per the NWS.

EF-0 is the lowest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which classifies tornadoes based on estimated wind speed and related damage.

The tornado lasted only about a minute, causing damage in a path 150 meters wide and half a mile long, added NWS surveyors.

"A tornado started along Reiglesville - Milford Road in Holland Township resulting in tree damage and significant damage to two farm outbuildings," said the weather service. "The path stayed over mostly open fields until Crab Apple Hill Road where additional tree damage including a large uprooted tree was noted. Though additional damage was noted in a path downstream from this area, the damage was not continuous and appeared to be more likely straight-line winds."

NWS storm survey teams were in Milford area examining damage after Monday's storms. Residents of Bethlehem Township also saw significant tree damage, though the NWS did not confirm a tornado there. They confirmed the Holland Township tornado on Wednesday night, after determining there was no tornado in Bethlehem or Milford.

This is the 11th tornado confirmed in the Garden State this year.
