NEW JERSEY — While the state grapples with another heat wave, several rounds of thunderstorms are forecasted to hit New Jersey starting Wednesday, according to the latest forecast. Forecasters are warning these storms could bring heavy rains and even flash flooding to the region.

Heat index values are anticipated to get up to 108 degrees in areas of the state, with excessive heat warnings issued in Warren, Morris, Essex, Somerset, Monmouth, Mercer, Camden, Gloucester, Burlington and Ocean counties. The rest have heat advisories, except for Cape May County, which has neither.

Storms are also expected.

"The heat and humidity will help fuel severe thunderstorms Wednesday into Wednesday evening as tropical moisture from Beryl sweeps into the region from the Midwest," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said.

The National Weather Service said that the first round of storms could come late morning or early afternoon on Wednesday in the northwestern area of New Jersey, with a second round late Wednesday night. These could be scattered severe storms, according to forecasters, with local damaging wind gusts.

For the rest of the state thunderstorms with heavy rain are possible Wednesday, potentially sparking localized flash flooding. For this, there is some risk across the entire state but again, the highest risk is in the northwestern potion. This will start Wednesday afternoon through night, and could linger into Thursday morning, the National Weather Service said.

Yet another round of storms is in store Thursday night into late Friday night, according to the National Weather Service. Again here heavy rain could create flash flooding. This is anticipated statewide, but the highest risk is in the Philadelphia metro area and southeastern areas, forecasters said. Light rain could continue through the day on Saturday.
