NEW JERSEY — A pair of storms will impact weekend plans for New Jersey residents, and the forecast rain and wind could be severe by the start of next week.

AccuWeather predicts that the first storm will impact New Jersey the most Friday, bringing steady rain and localized flash flooding to some communities.

“The heaviest of rain looks to occur late Friday afternoon through Friday night,” added meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly. A thunderstorm or two is possible, added the NWS.

More than an inch of rain could fall Friday and Saturday in parts of the region, said forecasters. Current weather models show that showers will be heaviest in communities north of I-95 in New Jersey, though the NWS said “uncertainty remains relatively high” for the exact timing and area of the most rainfall.

Also expect sustained winds of 15-25 miles per hour on Friday night with gusts 30-35 mph possible Friday night into Saturday morning that could blow down tree branches, forecasters said. Winds will be strongest along the coast.

Rain from this first system may linger around areas north of I-78 much of the day on Saturday, added the NWS.

A bigger storm arriving Sunday night will last until Monday, and a cold front will carry “more persistent and heavier rain” and strong winds along the northeastern coastal states.

AccuWeather forecasters said the storm could develop into a “bomb cyclone” or bombogenesis, when a storm with low pressure strengthens rapidly. Temperatures could fall into the 30s, as well, and the rain and wind could cause localized power outages.

“Winds will increase Sunday night into Monday ahead of frontal passage with gusts up to 30-35mph, before tapering off later Monday,” said the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.

The NWS’s New York City office, which forecasts for New Jersey counties in the northeast, added that Sunday’s rain could “be more beneficial than anything else” but cautioned that “nuisance flooding is certainly possible at times, particularly in the vulnerable urban locales.”

Currently, the National Weather Service says there is a limited risk of scattered thunderstorms on Sunday.
