Shabbar F. Danish, M.D., FAANS, chair of Neurosurgery at Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) and professor of Neurosurgery at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine received NJBIZ’s 2026 Healthcare Heroes award in the physician category. This honor recognizes his exceptional leadership, compassionate patient care, and pioneering work in neurosurgery.
Dr. Danish has been instrumental in advancing neurosurgical care at JSUMC, most notably by spearheading the integration of two groundbreaking technologies that work together: ZAP-X radiosurgery and Synaptive MRI. This innovative pairing, a first in the world, has revolutionized the treatment of brain tumors and other cranial conditions. ZAP-X offers a non-invasive, pain-free surgical option without incisions or anesthesia, while the Synaptive MRI provides real-time imaging, enhancing precision and significantly reducing the time from diagnosis to treatment. This unique combination has positioned the academic medical center, and fastest growing New Jersey hospital, as a global leader in neurosurgical innovation, with other health systems looking to emulate their model.
Colleagues and hospital leadership praise Dr. Danish for his unwavering dedication to his patients and his team. "Dr. Danish's commitment to providing the most advanced and compassionate care is truly inspiring," said Harpreet Pall, M.D., MBA, CPE, vice president and chief medical officer, JSUMC. "His innovative spirit and patient-centered approach have had a profound impact on our community and multitudes of lives."
Vito Buccellato, MPA, LNHA, president and chief hospital executive of JSUMC, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Dr. Danish's exceptional leadership. "Dr. Danish is a visionary leader who has helped build a world-class neurosurgery program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. His passion for excellence and his ability to inspire his team are evident in the outstanding care they provide every day."
Beyond his work with ZAP-X and Synaptive MRI, Dr. Danish is also a pioneer in laser therapy for brain tumors, changing the global approach to treating these diseases and redefining what is considered treatable. His career is marked by a relentless pursuit of innovation and a deep-seated compassion for his patients. As he says, “some operations are life changing. That’s the reason you go into this - the simple satisfaction that comes from helping.” For information about the Neuroscience Institute, visit www.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/en/services/neurosciences.
