Barnegat Fireworks Move From Bayfront; Chief Had Safety Concerns
Many residents will miss the bayfront display, but Police Chief Keith A. Germain says the high school is safer to secure.

BARNEGAT, NJ — Barnegat's 4th of July fireworks will move from the bayfront to Barnegat High School. The news felt surprising or upsetting to some residents, but Police Chief Keith A. Germain explained why he pushed for the change.
Germain cited safety concerns about the bayfront location in a message to residents Wednesday. Barnegat's fireworks display constitutes what the Department of Homeland Security defines as a mass gathering, he says.
That means the event is in an easily accessible location, attracts large numbers of people on a predictable or semi-predictable basis and may be vulnerable to attacks using simple tactics or ready available weapons.

"As a resident or visitor to Barnegat, you should be able to expect that you’ll be safe when you attend a large gathering such as the fireworks display," Germain said.
Certain conditions, such as lack of parking, make the dock a difficult place to secure, Germain said. He met with senior staff to explore alternatives and make a recommendation to the Township Committee.

The high school stuck out for several reasons, Germain said:
- 723 marked parking spaces, not counting spots at Project Playground. The Municipal Dock had 250 spaces.
- the high school and Donahue properties have more room for spectators.
- officers have ample experience securing large events at the high school, such as football games and graduation.
- it's easier to control traffic with fewer officers, with several exit routes.
- Barnegat can reduce the number of officers handling security by 30 percent, "a not-so-insignificant savings," Germain said.
The state fire marshal has approved the display at Barnegat High School.
Several people posted different reactions under Germain's note.
"Thank you Chief, for always prioritizing the safety of our community and it’s citizens even when it may not be popular," one person said. "You and your department are the best!"
"It's such a shame we have to be afraid of everything today," said another individual. "I feel so bad for all of our children growing up in these times. ... Unfortunately, I don't see us going to the High School for fire works. It will be way too crowded in that area for me & just not the same."
