Barnegat Lighthouse To Be Lit Once Again
Following a $1.3 million restoration project, Old Barney will be lit again on Oct. 29 - the ten-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy.

BARNEGAT LIGHT, NJ — Following a $1.3 million restoration project that left the iconic lighthouse covered in scaffolding all summer, Old Barney will shine once more very soon.
The new beacon light will be lit for the first time on Oct. 29, the ten-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, as exterior renovations of the Barnegat Lighthouse are complete.
The interior of the lighthouse will remain closed until next spring, according to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.

Barnegat Lighthouse State Park has remained open since Old Barney's closure; visitors were just unable to climb the lighthouse, and the beacon light has stayed dark since closing.

The extensive restoration work included "a complete exterior restoration of the lighthouse, masonry recoating and repairs to the brick facade, interior lantern steel platform repairs, roof repairs and the installation of new windows," according to the DEP.
"Thank you to the Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse who donated a new beacon light for the lighthouse as well as new security fencing," the DEP said.
Constructed in 1856, the Barnegat Lighthouse is one of the signature destinations along the Jersey shore and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
"The State Park Service looks forward to relighting the lighthouse beacon and welcoming visitors into the restored lighthouse soon," officials said when scaffolding began to be removed earlier in September.
