Barnegat Man Who Accused Of Killing Parents To Stay Jailed: Prosecutor

BARNEGAT, NJ — The Barnegat man accused of stabbing his parents to death will remain in jail pending his trial, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.

Michael Mulgrew, 34, has been detained at the Ocean County Jail since Nov. 2, when he was charged with murder in connection with the death of his parents, Eugene Mulgrew, 71, and Cheryl Mulgrew, 69.

The decision was made due to concerns about Mulgrew's mental health and ability to follow court orders, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Along with two counts of murder, Mulgrew is charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

The parents had sought mental health assistance for their son right before he stabbed them to death, according to a police report obtained by Patch.

By the time authorities arrived to the house on Lincoln Avenue, there were bloodstains on the front door and throughout the house, authorities said. According to the Asbury Park Press, one parent was stabbed 39 times and the other 41, but it wasn't clear which.

Mulgrew's trial is set for Jan. 10, the Asbury Park Press reported.
