Barnegat Mayor, Public Works Employees Rescue Turkey Chicks From Storm Drain
A happy ending - chicks and mom are safe now at their farm.
Thanks to Barnegat Public Works, Mayor John Novak and the Popcorn Park Zoo, a mama turkey and her little newly-hatched chicks are safe and sound.
The hen turkey had been sitting on her nest close to a storm drain. When the babies hatched, she started to walk them back to the farm where she lives. But the chicks were so small when they walked over a drain cover in the roadway, all but one fell through, according to Popcorn Park's Facebook page.
"Barnegat Public Works came right out with equipment to left the drain cover and with the help of Mayor John Novak, the cover was lifted and the four chicks rescued and put safely into a carrier," the post states. "We caught mom and brought her and her chicks back to the safety of the farm. Once we put mom in a holding pen she couldn't escape from, all were happy to be together again."
