N.J. Boys Get To Prom After Serious Garden State Parkway Crash

Two New Jersey boys survived a serious crash on the Garden State Parkway, and then got a State Police escort to their prom.

They got there, and that's what mattered.

Two New Jersey boys thought their prom fun was spoiled when they recently crashed into a utility pole while driving to the festivities in Long Beach Island.

Edward Fengya and Reno D’Agostini, both 17, were going stag on May 6 while heading to the MATES-Ocean County Vocational Technical School Prom in a 2003 Lincoln Town Car, police said.

Thanks to the New Jersey State Police, they got to the Long Beach Island resort, anyway. In fact the State Police gave them an escort.

The accident happened at 5:24 p.m. as they headed south on the Garden State Parkway when the car careened off of the right side of the roadway, struck a utility pole and became disabled, police said.

No one was hurt, but the police said boys were shaken up a bit. "And Edward, we surmise, was not relishing the thought of telling his mother about the car," according to the State Police website.

Troopers Chris Jones and Charles Garrison responded to the crash, as did Fengya's mother, who owns the car.

She told the boys to saddle up, because she needed to get them to the prom. But the troopers had another plan in mind.

"As the story goes, Trooper Jones was insistent on taking the boys to the prom, pointing out how shocking and cool it would be for the two arrive in a marked troop car," according to the website.

Jones pulled up to the yacht club on LBI, and when he exited the troop car, he walked up to the door with Edward and Reno and said to the chaperon, “Hey, do these two belong to you?”

"It should be noted, both boys’ moms were quite impressed with the conduct and professionalism of Troopers Jones and Garrison, and so are we!" wrote the State Police.
