These two incidents were able to be investigated and followed up because of citizens calling the police, Dellane said.

Speaking up is "incredibly important," Dellane said.

"People out there can effectively be the eyes and the ears of the police department," Myhre said, which Dellane agreed with.

"The reality is, we can't be every place all the time," Dellane said. He said that often people will call after the incident has occurred, and when asked why, answer "it's because I didn't want to bother you."

Dellane emphasized that citizens are not bothering the police because it is their job. He insisted that if you are concerned to call either 911 or the Stafford Police Department.

"Please make that call," Dellane said. He added that the department has programs and services for those struggling with mental health, substance abuse, homelessness and more.

Myhre and Dellane also reminded residents to take steps to prevent crimes of opportunity, like locking their doors and cars.

"Don't make things easy for criminals," Dellane said.
