Shocking Insensitivity

Onlookers snapping photos on site of tragic scene

On Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at approximately 3 PM, a vehicle struck the side of a popular restaurant at the Jersey Shore.
Sadly, two lives were lost and others were seriously injured. I am deeply sorry for the loss of life, my condolences go to the
families of those who were killed, and I sincerely wish a full and speedy recovery to the injured.

My son was working his shift at the restaurant when this horrific event occurred. Needless to say, he and everyone else at the scene
were appalled, shocked, and saddened.

Most appalling, however, was the fact that several onlookers at the scene immediately started snapping pictures with their cell phones/ I am
proud to say that my son had the moral strength and character to ask these people to put their phones away, plainly stating that this was not
the time for picture-taking, but to instead show respect for the privacy of the victims. I find this obvious demonstration of a lack of respect
and insensitivity to the need for privacy and the dignity of others is happening with increased frequency.

I understand and appreciate the use of technology and the ease that it allows us to readily share photos and information.
I further understand that pictures tell a thousand words. However, I feel that the pendulum has swung way too far to the side of
morbid curiosity, disrespect, and moral disregard. My hope is that adults will have a discussion with today's youth that being a
good citizen requires good judgement
