Watch For Package Thefts In Barnegat, Police Warn

The package thefts are specifically targeting people getting cell phones delivered to their homes, according to police.

BARNEGAT, NJ — Police are warning residents of a rising trend of package thefts not just in Barnegat, but statewide.

Package thefts specifically targeting cell phones being delivered to houses are on the rise, Barnegat police said.

"Investigations suggest that these thefts are orchestrated by a sophisticated ring or group," police said. "They have devised methods to obtain tracking numbers for these valuable items, enabling them to closely monitor delivery progress."

Video evidence shows the thieves taking the packages "mere minutes" after being delivered, wearing disguises like face masks or posing as delivery personnel from companies like Amazon, police said.

"In light of this, we strongly advise all residents to exercise caution when ordering cell phones for delivery," police said.

They suggested the following measures:

  • Utilize Package Tracking and Notifications: Take advantage of delivery tracking services offered by shipping companies. This way, you can monitor the status of your delivery and receive notifications when the package is en route or has been delivered.
  • Opt for Secure Delivery Options: Some shipping companies offer secure delivery options such as requiring a signature upon delivery or allowing packages to be held at a nearby distribution center for pickup. Consider selecting these options for added security.
  • Secure Package Drop-off Location: If possible, designate a secure location for package drop-offs, such as a locked mailbox, a parcel locker, or an area that is not easily visible from the street.
  • Schedule Deliveries Wisely: If you know you won't be home during the expected delivery window, consider scheduling the delivery for a time when you will be available, or arrange for delivery to a trusted neighbor or friend who can accept the package on your behalf.

"By implementing these proactive measures, you can reduce the risk of package theft and help ensure your deliveries arrive safely at your doorstep," police said.
