What's Happening This Weekend

Local events for the whole family

  • Learn firsthand how to  with a demonstration at 2 p.m. Friday at . Instructors will show how to clean crabs, open clams and filet fish at the family-friendly class. To register, call 732-793-1698. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for kids and free for those younger than 3. 

 

  • On Saturday, head to the for the post's . Shop for treasures and check out the gift auction table, all while raising money to help 11-year-old Kyle McGetrick and his family as Kyle battles cancer. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

 

  • The St. Francis wraps up this weekend at the St. Francis Church Grounds, 4700 Long Beach Boulevard, on LBI. The rides, games and food vendors are open from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with pay-one-price wristbands every night. Tonight, Friday, the wristbands are $20; they're $25 Saturday and Sunday.

  • If you'd like not to break the bank seeing a new release in a theater, head to the  for free showings of two favorites. "Jaws" will be shown Friday (because why not?), and "City Slickers" will be played Sunday starting at dusk on the beach at Hiering Avenue. 

 

  • On Saturday night, head to the Barnegat municipal dock, 411 E. Bay Ave., for another . This week, Reunited performs from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

  • The fifth annual will be held Saturday, Aug. 13 at the South Harbor Marina in Waretown. There's still time to pay the $70-per-boat entry fee and join in the competition – the heaviest fish gets the winner $500, and there are prizes for lower-weight fish, too. There will also be a free barbecue for participants, music, door prizes and a 50/50. Proceeds benefit Ocean of Love, which serves families of kids with cancer in Ocean County.

 

  • The  continues with free concerts all weekend. The  performs at 7 p.m. Friday at the . The Jersey Gold Band will play at 7 p.m. Saturday at Beachwood Beach. Sunday, the perform at 7 p.m. at the library. All concerts are free.
