Bernards Police Stop Meth, Heroin From Hitting Streets

A large amount of drugs, including heroin, Methamphetamine, prescription pills, were found during a traffic stop last week.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Bernards Township Police were able to stop a large amount of drugs from hitting the streets following a traffic stop last week.

On Aug. 21 just before 1 p.m. Officer John Mulhall was parked at the Exxon gas station on King George Road when he saw a silver 2012 Toyota Camry pass by with an equipment violation, police said.

Mulhall pulled over the car when Naylea R. Gutierrez, 29, of Tucson, Arizona tried to quickly get out of car and gave a fake name claiming she had lost her identification, police said.

During the traffic stop Mulhall smelled raw marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and asked Edward A. Bejarano, 34, of Tucson, Arizona to step out of the car. Bejarano was then found to have a loaded handgun, police said.

Both Bejarano and Gutierrez were arrested, the car was impounded, and a search of the vehicle found large quantities of a variety of drugs.

Bejarano was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a firearm during a controlled dangerous substance offense, second-degree conspiracy to distribute heroin, Methamphetamine, prescription drugs, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia and issued motor vehicle offenses.

Gutierrez was charged with third-degree hindering apprehension, second-degree possession with intent to distribute heroin, second-degree possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, second-degree possession with intent to distribute oxycodone, third-degree possession of hydrocodone, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both were logged in the Somerset County Jail.
