VIRTUAL BBC’s Inspector Morse: Music by Barrington Pheloung with Dr. Robert Butts

Event Details
Music for television shows is only now starting to be studied and explored. Among the most impactful composers was Barrington Pheloung, an Australian composer. Perhaps his most memorable work was the music he composed and/or arranged for the BBC show Inspector Morse. Unique to television, the detective inspired three related shows - Morse, Lewis, Endeavor. Pheloung was the composer for all three. Pheloung's melodies weave through all three series, further uniting the stories and characters. As impressive as his original compositions were, equally impressive was his ability to weave music by composers from the Renaissance through the modern eras through the stories - including music by Palestrina, Vivaldi, Mozart, Elgar, Wagner, and Verdi. Morse, Lewis, and Endeavour were each marked by wonderful acting, great writing, impactful camerawork and a unique approach to film scoring originated by Barrington Pheloung.
Presenter: Dr. Butts, artistic director and conductor of the Baroque Orchestra of NJ, teaches at Montclair State University, The Casperan School of Graduate Studies at Drew University and for the NJ Council for the Humanities.
