Eid Could Be Added To Bernards Township Schools District Holiday Calendar

Superintendent Nick Markarian is expected to draft a calendar for 2026-27 for Board review and first reading in October.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The Bernards Township School District may soon be observing the Muslim holiday of Eid.

Board member Robin McKeon, who chairs the Policy Committee, said at Monday's Board of Education meeting that Superintendent Nick Markarian will be drafting a '26-'27 school calendar for board review and first reading in October that would add Eid as a holiday.

"The board must approve the 3-years out calendar by December. Last spring the board discussed and recommended adding Eid as a holiday on the calendar," said McKeon.

Markarian will add language to the calendar policy to include the Eid as a district holiday when it falls on a school day and will also adjust the language in the calendar policy to reflect the flexibility of how the district has been handling snow days the past several years, according to McKeon.

There are two major Islamic holidays celebrated around the globe. The first is Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, and the second is Eid al-Adah, according to History.com.
