Surprise! Watch Teary Reunion Between U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and Their Moms

Grab a tissue! A Basking Ridge native is among the players reunited with her mom.

Mothers and daughters having dinner together to celebrate Mother’s Day is pretty common this time of year, unless you are a member of the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT). Most of the players on the team have not seen their moms on Mother’s Day for years due to their game schedule. One of the team members has not spent a Mother’s Day with her mom in 14 years.

Watch the truly touching reactions of the players when their moms surprised them during a team dinner meeting in San Jose last Saturday. As the moms entered the banquet room, they were met with gasps, smiles and tears followed by countless hugs.

“Tonight I have never been more surprised,” said one of the players.

Tobin Heath, 26, of Basking Ridge, was among the players on the USWNT reunited with her mom. Heath currently plays at the professional level for Portland Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). She joined Thorns FC in July 2014 after finishing her season with Paris Saint-Germain in France.

Heath, a 2006 graduate of Ridge High School, played collegiate soccer at the University of North Carolina, where she and the North Carolina Tar Heels won the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship in 2006, 2008 and 2009. She finished her college career with 19 goals and 32 assists.

Heath was one of four New Jersey State residents to make the 23-player roster, joining Christie Rampone, of Point Pleasant; Carli Lloyd, of Delran; and Heather O’Reilly, of East Brunswick, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

U.S. Soccer flew the moms from all over the country to Northern California to surprise their daughters in honor of the Mother’s Day holiday. The following day, for the first time in the history of the women’s games, the team took to the field while walking proudly alongside their moms, before taking on Ireland at the Avaya Stadium in San Jose.

The team is comprised of 23 women from all over the country and will be taking part in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup series in Canada this summer.
