Wednesday, March 29 is Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day. The Belleville Historical Society will commemorate the day with a 4 p.m. ceremony at the Veterans Laurel Section at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.

More than 4,000 veterans from throughout the area rest in the Laurel Veterans Circle. During the month of March, the society walked the rows of military gravestones locating the graves of the young men killed in action in Vietnam. One hundred and thirty-seven gravesites were identified and later cleaned by society members and student volunteers. The gravesites of scores of other young Vietnam veterans who died within a few years of the end of the war were also identified and are in the process of being cleaned. These men most likely succumbed to war related injuries. The society marked the more than 225 graves with U.S. flags. The cemetery is located at 28 Hoover Avenue.
